Personal Lines Underwriter
General Definition
Determines the desirability and conditions for accepting or continuing coverage in accordance with Company standards. Supports the Sales Department in the acquisition, service and retention of prospects and policyholders. Underwriter has a responsibility to help the Company achieve its goal of providing good insurance protection at a reasonable cost to Farm Bureau members.
Special Training, Education, Knowledge, and Skills Required
College degree. Strong oral & written communication skills are needed. Must be able to travel. Expected to participate in Continuing Education classes (INS or CPCU). Computer skills, knowledge of e-mail and PMS system preferable. Knowledge of property values. Must have ability to quickly analyze information and make decisions.
Major Duties of Position
Reviews applications for insurance to determine desirability, proper coverage, classification and attachment of proper forms.
Reviews all supplemental information received in connection with applications for insurance.
Examines change requests for approval.
Provide instructions for Operations Department to process changes or endorsements to policies.
Communicates decisions on desirability and coverage to Agent by memo or telephone. Decisions are sometimes adverse; must have good communication skills to keep climate
between Company (Home Office) and Agent healthy. Must respect Agent and earn Agent's respect.Processes "correspondence" concerning underwriting responsibilities received from Agents, policyholders, lienholders, and regulatory agencies. Correspondence is usually by letter or telephone, but may be in person.
Reviews claims activity as necessary for information developed that may affect desirability of coverage or rating.
Assists agents (usually by phone) with technical aspects of Sales to prospects or service to policyholder by interpreting manual and policy provisions.
Possesses thorough knowledge of Bureau and Company manuals.
Possesses thorough knowledge of Company guidelines and standards and ability to apply these guidelines to applications and policy changes.
Possesses good understanding of Company goals and objectives in providing insurance
services to policyholder members.Possesses thorough knowledge of the provisions of each policy for the line or lines of insurance underwritten and all applicable endorsements for each policy.
Maintains proper control of work flow for his underwriting territory and shares workload of others as need arises.
