Office Adjuster - Medical Claims

General Definition

An Office Adjuster (OA) investigates, evaluates, and negotiates settlements of specific categories of claims in an office setting. OAs working in a Field District Claims Office work both casualty and property claims of a limited size. Office Adjusters in our Medical Claims District Claims Office resolve claims for Medical Payments coverage.

Special Training, Education, Knowledge, and Skills Required

A bachelor’s degree or comparable work experience is preferred. Good oral and written communication skills are also required. Must be able to conduct business in a professional manner by telephone or written communication and must be able to deal effectively with the public in stressful situations. Dependable, responsible person must be able to work independently and as a team member. Maintain CE in compliance with N.C. Department of Insurance and N.C. Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company requirements.

Familiarity with medical/legal terminology is helpful for work in our Medical Claims District Claims Office. Interest in auto and home repair as well as contract review is helpful for office adjusters working in our Field District Claims Offices.

Major Duties of Position

  • Verify coverage on loss assignments.

  • Promptly contact, and maintain contact, with insureds and claimants.

  • Establish reserves and update as needed.

  • Comply with regulatory guidelines.

  • Determine covered damages using provided resources.

  • Investigate losses and apply policy coverage.

  • Determine legal liability for losses and damages.

  • Effect payment or denial of claims.

  • Maintain current, detailed notes and report on details of claims in various stages of development.

  • Manage/control expenses.

  • Attend various meetings/classes on behalf of the company.

  • Additional duties deemed necessary by management.

Qualifications for Senior Office Adjuster

  • Recommendation from the District Claim Manager and Regional Claim Manager.

  • Five years of service as an Office Adjuster or equivalent adjusting position with N.C. Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, Inc.

  • Satisfactory completion of all required industry coursework.

  • Successfully pass tests on contracts written by the company.

  • Successfully pass tests on general claims knowledge, company background and organization information.
