Database Administrator

General Definition

Responsible for working with the other DBA’s to manage all of the corporate databases across a range of operating system platforms including z/OS, Windows, and Linux. Database systems include DB2 for z/OS, DB2 LUW and SQL Server.

Special Training, Education, Knowledge, and Skills Required

  • Prefer four-year Computer Science degree and at least five years of experience as a Database Administrator or two-year technical degree and at least seven years of experience as a Database Administrator.

  • DB2 Database Administration technical experience required running on z/OS platform.

  • Strong knowledge of DB2 Utilities.

  • Strong technical understanding of SQL and Performance tuning.

  • General knowledge or have worked with SQL SERVER.

  • General knowledge or have worked with DB2 LUW.

  • Effective problem determination and resolution skills.

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills.

  • Prefer general knowledge of insurance or financial applications.

  • IBM DB2 Database Administrator Certification for DB2 z/OS v11 or above is a plus.

Major Duties of Position

  • Responsible for the Physical Data Model for all structures built from the Logical Data Model constructed by the Data Analyst. This will include the generation or coding of DDL to create tables, indexes, table spaces, databases, storage groups, etc.

  • Responsible for the backup and recovery procedures for all corporate databases. This will require detailed knowledge of the application processes to ensure the correct strategy is applied.

  • Responsible for the security procedures for all databases. Will work in conjunction with the RACF Administrator and/or Active Directory Administrator to apply security to the corporate databases.

  • Responsible for monitoring the performance of all database systems. Will work with the other DBA’s and Technical Support Groups to tune the database systems. Other duties will include but are not limited to, keeping table and database statistics up to date, running reorgs and monitoring buffer pool usage.

  • Will identify inefficiencies to the Data Analyst for remodeling when needed. Will request changes to Application Systems when required.

  • Will review all new or modified SQL used by any application and will have the option to rewrite the SQL to insure performance of all database systems.

  • Will create test database environments and assist the Application Teams in the development process with utilities to load, unload, backup, or restore the test environment.

  • Responsible for performing DB2 system installation. Will schedule and perform upgrades to DB2 systems.

  • Assist in application troubleshooting by providing solutions or directions that are consistent and effective.

  • Provide 24/7 rotating on-call database support.
