About the Role

Work in this category encompasses both Systems Analysis and Programming. Systems Analysis responsibilities include analyzing and designing systems, as well as developing major modifications to existing systems. Programming responsibilities include reviewing programs, developing one-time programs to test and implement systems, and modifying existing programs as required. The individual will work under the general direction of an Information Systems Applications Supervisor or a Senior Systems Analyst.

Education and Experience

  • A four-year degree and four to five years of programming experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with mainframe utilities such as TSO, ISPF, and SCLM is preferred.

  • Experience with mainframe CICS and/or assembler programming is preferred.

  • Experience with PMSC’s Policy Management System (PMS) and statistical reporting is desirable.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of programming on an IBM z/OS mainframe, including but not limited to COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, and SQL.

  • Knowledge of insurance and/or accounting applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently debug issues in existing systems and implement appropriate solutions.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan work effectively and manage time efficiently.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of staff and management. This includes clearly explaining system functionality and the rationale for changes in a concise manner, responding promptly to inquiries, and ensuring supervisors are included on business-related communications as appropriate.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, including sharing knowledge, maintaining documentation, and assisting team members as needed.

  • Strong multitasking skills, with the ability to adjust priorities in response to regulatory requirements, production issues, and urgent business needs.

  • Experience integrating internal systems with purchased or third-party software products.

Location and Commitments

  • Full-time role based at our Corporate Office in Raleigh, NC 27612.

  • Reports to Information Systems Application Supervisor Policy Management Team A.

  • Hybrid work from home policy after training period (three days per week in-office required).

Responsibilities of the Role

  1. Interview users to identify existing system issues and gather requirements for new system modifications.

  2. Analyze and design enhancements to existing systems, including evaluating current data processing logic, drawing conclusions, and implementing code changes with minimal guidance. Responsibilities also include reviewing, documenting, and preparing detailed specifications for COBOL programs to be replicated for future integrations.

  3. Analyze and resolve issues within existing systems by efficiently researching production problems, identifying root causes, and presenting recommended solutions along with the impact of each option.

  4. Develop clear, concise program specifications for implementation by junior programmers.

  5. Prepare test data and review, validate, and approve test results to ensure system changes meet requirements.

  6. Research and determine the root cause of application issues, including identifying the source of failure, the number of impacted policies, and the underlying reason for the issue.

  7. Create and maintain user documentation and computer operations documentation.

  8. Provide guidance and support to other programmers and analysts by answering project-related questions in a timely manner, explaining system functionality, and sharing relevant documentation.

  9. Adhere to project management standards and processes as defined in the Project Workflow Guidelines.

  10. Provide rotational on-call support during evenings, weekends, and holidays, maintaining sufficient knowledge of implemented projects and code changes to ensure timely issue resolution and minimize processing delays.
